Lead In Our Kid’s Apple Juice….

Apple Juice

A new study from California finds high levels of lead in common foods and drinks our children consume.  125 out of 146 products tested at the EPA – Environmental Protection Agency, were found to have high lead levels.

“Lead exposure among children is a particular concern because their developing bodies absorb lead at a higher rate and because children are particularly sensitive to lead’s toxic effects, including decreased IQ,” says toxicologist Barbara G. Callahan, PhD, of the University of Massachusetts.

Lead was found in apple juice, grape juice, packaged peaches and pears including the baby food peaches and pears.  Some items were labeled as organic.

Many products have enough lead in one serving to warrant warning labels under California law, says the San Francisco based Environmental Law Foundation, who did generate the study.

“Scientists agree that there is no safe level of exposure to lead,” according to the foundation.  “Lead accumulates in the body from multiple exposures.”

Cranberry Apple Pomegranate Detox Cleansing Diet Recipe

Hi

Are your feeling fresh and lively today? I hope so.

A couple days ago I had this diet for a full day. It was delisious and full of powerful antioxidents. A detox diet like this is so simple to do because, once you get used to them your are not hungry all day yet becoming healthier. You could, of course, use a couple different juice recipes through the day. The idea is a day of juice only to detox and cleanse your body.

The recipe amount makes a good meal size amount for one person. I had this 3 times during the day.

1) Take a nice big Pomegranate from the fridge and cut it in half then into wedges. Use your fingers to push the seeds into a bowl. Don’t worry when a few small pieces of the pomegranate husk fall into the bowl also, just pick them out. Then I just get a spoon and eat this while drinking my cranberry apple juice. Tes, I know this is not officially juice but they reall taste great this way.

2) Take about 5 apples and a one pound bag of cranberries and juice them up. Hopefully you had them in the fridge and they are nice and cold. This is a delicious blend and feel free to add this to your daily detox list. If you had a big glass of this with breakfast I think your would be glad you did.

Pleas eget on my mail list so you get new recipes every week.

Have An Apple Detox Cleansing Recipe Day

Well I don’t know if I can properly use the term recipe here because this is just all about eating fresh raw apples.

The recipe is 6 to 10 apples for the day. As you may recall I believe the best way to do detox and cleansing is to incorporate it into my daily life. This apple cleanse is so easy you can do it a few times a week. You will not be starving hungry and apples are just super healthy to eat.

I found this great list of the health benefits of apples at the Eat This Blog

We’re told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but what exactly are the health benefits of apples? Here are ten reasons to heed the advice of that old proverb.

Bone Protection
French researchers found that a flavanoid called phloridzin that is found only in apples may protect post-menopausal women from osteoporosis and may also increase bone density. Boron, another ingredient in apples, also strengthens bones.

Asthma Help
One recent study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who drank apple juice only once per month. Another study showed that children born to women who eat a lot of apples during pregnancy have lower rates of asthma than children whose mothers ate few apples.

Alzheimer’s Prevention
A study on mice at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Lower Cholesterol
The pectin in apples lowers LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. People who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Lung Cancer Prevention
According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer Prevention
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.

Colon Cancer Prevention
One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Liver Cancer Prevention
Research found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.

Diabetes Management
The pectin in apples supplies galacturonic acid to the body which lowers the body’s need for insulin and may help in the management of diabetes.

Weight Loss
A Brazilian study found that women who ate three apples or pears per day lost more weight while dieting than women who did not eat fruit while dieting.

How healthy is that? very very healthy. Truth is that with a good fresh raw diet, exercise, and keeping a good additude, many of the chronic diseases that seem to plague our modern society can be avoided completely.

Apple Cider Face Toner Recipe

Apple cider vinegar helps restore glow in flaky, impure skin. It also helps maintain skin’s natural acid mantle which protects from skin infections. Honey is another time-tested skin purifier, while glycerin soothes and moisturizes. Due to the acidic nature of this preparation, I recommend wearing sunscreen daily to prevent uneven pigmentation.

INGREDIENTS:

5 oz / 150 ml filtered water or chamomile tea

1 oz / 30 ml apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

½ teaspoon vitamin C powder

1 teaspoon glycerin

METHOD:

Add vinegar, honey, and vitamin C powder to the tea. Stir well to disperse vitamin C crystals. Add glycerin and stir well.

USE: every night, wipe your skin with a cotton ball soaked in this toner.

STORAGE: 2 months in a cold dark place.

2 Day Apple Detox Cleansing Diet

Why a 2 Day Apple Detox Cleansing Diet? Apples are a very good system detox cleanser and personally I feel doing frequent short diet detox cleansing is a better way to go. 2 day detox fits in my busy schedule and is easier to manage. If you have followed my blog you know I believe a detox cleansing diet should be incorporated in your daily life and be part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

First get a bunch of apples, it is better to get too many, then if you have extra you can juice them or give them to friends. Select a few different apple varieties. Delicious, Fuji, Pippin, or any of the hundreds of apple varieties that may be in your area. I do include apple juice but also herbal teas like peppermint and jasmine and water.

If possible get Organic apples and wash them well.

Think of different ways to make apples. You can just eat them as they are, chop them and even cook them. For dinner time I bake 3-4 apples about 20 min at 325 degrees F and put cinnamon on them. With a nice cup of Jasmine tea this is delicious and feels like you had dinner. You may find yorself fixing this on non-detox cleansing days, I do.

You can chop them up and add some water and maybe ice in a blender and make a shake. Blend different types to create your favorite. By applying a little creativity you can make this a good tasting and satisfying experience. I tend to find my taste buds get more sensitive when I detox so I find foods taste better.

To add to the cleansing effect take walks, do some deep breathing, take showers and use a brush to scrub your skin well. This all aids your circulation and stimulates your energy. A nice relaxing Epsom Salts bath in the evening is especially good for getting into a deep restful state to add to the rejuvination.

For a few days before and after it is best to make sure you are eating at last half of your diet in fresh food.

Apples have lots of fiber and the Pectin is believed to help remove heavy metals from your system. They hav a type of anti-oxidant called flavonoids which are good for you and may help prevent cancer.

Apples provide plenty of vitamin E, folic acid, and biotin. Vitamin C, beta carotine, potassium, iodine, silica, magnesium, calcium and some amino acids.

As with any fasting, it is possible you could have gas, bloating, fatigue, or headaches. If that happens lie down or take a hot bath. If the symptoms persist stop the fast and maybe contact your health practitioner. If you have any serious ailments you should discuss fasting with your health practitioner before doing one. Mostly these things are minor or do not happen but I have to say this to make sure you are taking a reasonable course.

Gluten-Free Apple Turnovers

apple turnover baked

Here is another example of the kind of tasty treat you can make with my multipurpose pastry dough.  My family really likes these.  They are like individual apple pies, and make a perfect dessert or snack.  Of course, I hope you will experiment and try other fillings.

Unfortunately, I misplaced the paper where I wrote down the actual amounts I used for the filling, but it’s really a matter of taste.  Here’s what I think I did:

2 apples
1  – 2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. sugar

I’m sure other sweeteners would work well too.  Chop the apples pretty small then combine them with the cinnamon and sugar.

apple turnovers - chopped apples

Make 1 recipe of  pastry dough.  Roll the dough and use a bowl to cut it in circles about 7 – 7 1/2 inches in diameter.  Place some of the apples on half the circle.

Fold the dough over and press the edges together.  Place it on a baking sheet and prick the top of the dough with a fork several times.

Bake at 350 degrees 15 – 20 minutes or until lightly browned on top.
