Saving Money on Gluten-Free Foods

Cashier Accepting Credit Card

There is no doubt that gluten-free foods are more expensive than their gluten-filled counterparts.  If you’ve been gluten-free for more than a week, you are well aware of that.

How can you save money on gluten-free foods?

1.  Eat Naturally Gluten-Free Foods

This may not be the answer you want to hear, but I’m putting it first because it’s the easiest, healthiest, and often most frugal way to eat gluten free.

Shop the perimeter of the grocery store for things like fresh fruits, vegetables, and meat, as well as eggs, milk and cheese (if you can eat those).

Rice and beans are a classic frugal combination.  I recommend rinsing dry or canned beans before eating them.

2.  Shop Around

There are many stores carrying gluten-free products.  My son’s favorite cereal can vary as much as $2 per box depending on the store.

My experience is that independent health food stores tend to be pricey, but they might carry items you can’t find elsewhere.

Chain health food stores such as Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Mom’s Organic Market tend to have the best prices.

Most regular chain grocery stores carry some gluten-free specialty foods, but prices can vary.  They do sometimes put items on sale.

3.  Shop Online

There are a variety of places where you can buy gluten-free foods online.  Even with shipping, it can be cheaper than buying at a store, but you need to compare prices and always include the cost of shipping.

Amazon had good deals on gluten-free food, especially if you use Subscribe & Save where available.  Remember, you can always change when the next delivery will be.

A couple other good choices are iHerb and Nuts.com.

4.  Coupons

Check manufacturer web sites for coupons they may offer.

Janelle from Gluten Freely Frugal has a list of coupons available right now.

5.  Samples

Attending gluten-free or celiac events and vendor fairs can often mean that you come home with product samples.  It usually costs to get into big events, but if the cost is low and the number of vendors attending is high, then you will likely come home with more product than you paid for.

Take time to talk with the vendors and let them know you have difficulty affording gluten-free products.  They need to hear from us on that issue, and they might give you extra samples or coupons.

Is the Gluten-Free Diet a Fad?

href="http://glutenfreehomemaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/fad-tall.jpg"> style="background-image: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 10px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;" title="fad-tall" src="http://glutenfreehomemaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/fad-tall_thumb.jpg" alt="fad-tall" width="150" height="240" align="right" border="0" />The bottom line is no…..but sometimes yes.

I understand the hesitancy of manufacturers and restaurants to jump on the gluten-free diet bandwagon.  They are worried that they will invest significant time and money into offering gluten-free food only to have people stop buying it after a while.

Is the gluten-free diet a fad diet?

No.  For people like me and my son who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it is not a fad, and the idea that it is a fad can rouse emotions.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease which causes a person’s body to attack itself, specifically the lining of the small intestine, when gluten is consumed.  There is no cure nor are there any drugs to treat the disease.  Life-long adherence to a gluten-free diet is the only treatment.  That is not a fad.

Gluten Sensitivity is the term used for people who also have an intolerance to gluten.   They might have celiac disease but it is undiagnosed for a variety of reasons, or they react to gluten without having intestinal damage.  Either way, the symptoms are unpleasant and living a healthy life is dependent on eliminating gluten.  That is not a fad.

The number of people who are on a gluten-free diet for the above two reasons is growing.  Increasingly, doctors are diagnosing celiac patients, and people are  becoming aware of the possible affects of gluten on their bodies.

As more and more people go gluten free for health reasons, more and more people hear about it, and as a result, some people jump on the bandwagon for the wrong reasons.  That is a fad.

Is the gluten-free diet a fad?  Absolutely not!  At least not for most of us.  For some people it is, but that’s not all bad. Maybe a few of them will realize that they too feel better and are healthier on a gluten-free diet.

Euforia Gluten-Free Cakes Review & Giveaway

Happy New Year!  I trust that everyone had a safe new year’s celebration.  I’m looking forward to blogging and interacting with you in the year ahead.

href="http://glutenfreehomemaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/euforia-thousand-layer-cakes.jpg"> style="background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;" title="euforia-thousand-layer-cakes" src="http://glutenfreehomemaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/euforia-thousand-layer-cakes_thumb.jpg" alt="euforia-thousand-layer-cakes" width="400" height="278" border="0" />

If you’re like me, you’ve probably never heard of href="http://www.euforiaconfections.com/" target="_blank">Euforia all natural thousand layer cake, but it definitely intrigued me.  1,000 layers?  Each individually baked?  That’s impressive.

Euforia makes a regular and a flourless gluten free cake.  I was very skeptical of the gluten free status given that they use regular flour in their other cakes, but they do take precautions and their products are independently tested to less than 5 parts per million gluten.  Here’s what they said about manufacturing:

“The gluten-free cakes are made in the same facility/on the same equipment as gluten-containing products.  However,  the GF cakes are produced on dedicated days when ONLY the GF products are prepared. We do a thorough cleaning/sanitation of all surfaces and equipment on the days in between the gluten baking days and the gluten-free days. Also, the volume of product we make with gluten is very small compared to the quantities of gluten-free product.”

Unfortunately, these cakes do contain butter and milk so I did not taste them, but the rest of my family sampled them.  The cake comes in individually wrapped slices.  It is available in vanilla and spice flavors.

The cake was moist, I could see that.  My family preferred the spice flavor.  Vanilla seemed plain to them.  They thought the cake was good, but not great.  Being a flourless cake, it has an eggy sponge cake taste and texture to it.

I really wish I had been able to taste them because my family is not good at critiquing finer foods.  That’s what these cakes are.  They are probably not something you would buy to have for your child’s after school snack.  They would be perfect for accompanying  coffee or tea while you chat with a friend.

class="konafilter">Where to Buy:  You can order from the href="http://www.euforiaconfections.com/" target="_blank">Euforia website.  If you use the code “euforia1k” (no quotes) you will receive $5 off any cake purchase.  You can also but from title="Amazon affiliate link" href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JFAVOQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=theglutfreeho-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005JFAVOQ" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Amazon style="margin: 0px;" src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=theglutfreeho-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B005JFAVOQ" alt="" width="1" height="1" border="0" />.  A box of twelve small cake slices sells for about $30.

class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5216" title="giveaway" src="http://glutenfreehomemaker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/giveaway.jpg" alt="giveaway" width="406" height="181" />
