Best Way to Set Up a Fat Loss Workout Plan

It’s a new year and you’ve set your fat loss goal, but if don’t have a fat loss workout plan, that goal is going to be difficult to achieve.  If you’ve read Fat X 101 before, you know that I prefer to refrain from using the term “weight loss” and prefer the more specific term fat loss.  For more on that check out my article “Fat Loss is What You Want”.  Anyhow, let’s get to the point, you want to lose body fat, and the best way to accomplish that is with a workout plan.

If you’re new to fitness, you’re probably going to hear a bunch of myths and misconceptions about losing body fat and becoming more fit. Ask the general public what the best way to set up a fat loss workout plan is, and the uninformed or misinformed will quickly jump into spitting out advice on how cardio is the best way to lose fat and get fit.  Another big myth that you’re likely to hear when inquiring on the best way to set up a fat loss workout plan is; high rep training is the best way to lose fat.

Both cardio, and high rep training have their places in a fitness and fat loss workout plan, but they, alone, are not the best way to lose body fat, nor are they the best methods to get fit.  If fat loss, a leaner, more toned, fit and athletic you is what you are trying to achieve, boosting your metabolism and becoming more fit are going to be key factors, short and longterm.

Traditional cardio workouts (monotonous low intensity movement), and high rep training, are not the best ways to kick up your metabolism.  Both of those methods can actually have a detrimental effect on fat loss and your metabolism, if you’re not careful.  For more on that read my article “Cardio Can Hurt Your Fat Burning Goals”.

The most proven method to kick up your metabolism is to build and maintain lean body tissue (a.k.a muscle).  Again, cardio, and high rep training are not going to accomplish that in the best and most efficient way.  Resistance training (a.k.a weight training) on the other hand, especially in the lower rep ranges, definitely will!

Here’s where things get a bit complicated, since I try to keep things simple here on Fat X 101, I’ll just go ahead and cut to the chase.  Resistance training will help build and maintain muscle, which in turn will boost or keep your metabolism boosted.  But, there’s a good way to set up you resistance training (weight training) program, and then there’s a best way to set up you resistance training program if you want to target fat loss and overall fitness.

The best way to utilize resistance training (weight training) in a fitness and fat loss workout plan is to do multi-joint exercises in circuit fashion, therefore not only getting in a resistance or weight training workout, but also kicking up your heart rate, and getting in a cardio workout at the same time.  Setting up your fat loss workout plan in this way, will not only kick up your metabolism, but, it will also kick up your overall fitness level.  Both good things if you want to lose fat fast and keep it off.  Fat loss follows fitness!  Get more fit, build some lean body tissue (muscle), boost your metabolism and the fat loss will follow!

My Fat X Program is set up exactly in that method.  I included easy to learn, multi-joint exercises that have been proven to work and wrapped them in a more advanced circuit training method for better, more efficient results.  You get in a metabolism boosting workout, while at the same time working your cardiovascular system (cardio).  An excellent combination for overall fitness and fat loss!

Whether you do my Fat X Program, or you come up with your own fat loss workout plan, remember to track your workouts.  Tracking your workouts will guarantee that your long term fitness and fat loss plan succeeds. If you’re doing the Fat X Program, use the workout manual to write in your numbers. If you’re doing your own workout program, find a method of tracking your workouts.  Tracking your workouts and improving on them is one of the most important factors and one of the best ways to  make a workout plan successful longterm.  Otherwise you will spin your wheels, putting in the same effort or even worse, each time you do that workout.  I see people making that mistake on a consistent basis.  It’s no wonder why they have a hard time getting results, even though they seem to be putting in the time at the gym.

Good luck to you on accomplishing your fitness and fat loss goals!  Feel free to e-mail me with any questions, or better yet, post them on the Fat X 101 Facebook, and I’ll answer them as quick as I can.

Apple Cider Vinegar: Acne, Weight Loss, Dandruff Plus Other Uses

What is apple cider vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is produced by allowing the bacteria and yeast to break down the sugar in apple cider and turn it into alcohol and then into vinegar. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic, lactic, citric, and malic acids.

Apple cider vinegar has a light yellow-brown color and is usually unfiltered and unpasteurized. Health benefits of apple cider vinegar include lowering blood glucose levels. When consumed with meals, apple cider vinegars lowers the glycemic index of foods and in this way assists weight loss. I found that it tastes less acrid when mixed with little apple juice. The usual recommendation is to take 1 tablespoon diluted in a glass of water before meals, but if you are prone to heartburn avoid taking the apple cider vinegar on empty stomach. It’s fine to take it with meals. I also found that when I take apple cider vinegar regularly, I feel less prone to hunger attacks or cravings for chocolate.

Apple cider vinegar and acne

Apple cider vinegar is a very useful skin tonic. When used in skin preparations, apple cider vinegar lowers skin’s pH. As a result, many unfriendly bacteria, including acne bacteria, are destroyed. As a mild natural acid, apple cider vinegar also helps clarify the skin, dissolve and rinse off dead skin cells, and cleanse the pores. For more natural treatments for acne, visit Petite Marie Organics Acne Skincare page.

Apple cider vinegar also makes a great poultice for acne. Do not use it undiluted as you may suffer severe skin irritation and even a scar! Instead, dilute the vinegar 2:1 with water or an herbal tea and saturate a cotton pad, then apply to the blemish and leave overnight if possible.

Apple cider vinegar for hair

Apple cider vinegar is also a valuable help for dandruff. If you suffer from dandruff, apply some diluted (2:1) apple cider vinegar to your scalp, wrap your head in a towel and relax for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it off. If you suffer from dry flaking scalp, keep the spray bottle of diluted apple cider vinegar in your bathroom to rinse or splash your hair after shampooing. Apple cider vinegar also makes your hair grow faster because it stimulates the circulation in the scalp.

Break a Fat Loss Plateau

Contrary to popular belief, when you hit a fat burning (fat loss) plateau, it’s not more cardio that you need, it’s more strength (absolute strength) that you need.  One of the main reasons people hit a plateau when trying to achieve a fat loss or fitness goal is that they become limited in how much work they can produce, because they are limited by their absolute strength. If you stop increasing your workout output, then your metabolic processes also stop being challenged and forcing change within your body.  This is when you need to work on your absolute strength, so that you can do more work in the same amount of time and break through that fat burning (fat loss) and fitness plateau.

This is a bit of a complicated subject, but as I always attempt to do, I will try to simplify it. Let’s say you can do 10 body weight squats in 30 seconds and that it takes 100 calories worth of work to accomplish, plus an after burn effect of another 100 calories (200 calories total).  The next time you do that, your body will become more efficient, possibly only burning 80 calories to accomplish that work, plus a possible after burn effect of another 80 calories (160 calories total).  This will happen so on an so forth until you body only uses maybe maybe 100 total calories to do that work in that amount of time.

As you can see, you’re body will be using less and less calories to move the same weight, in the same amount of time, for those 10 reps.  That’s where plateaus come in.  The best way to break that plateau is to increase your absolute strength and then to use that strength to be able to move more weight for those same ten reps, within those 30 seconds. This added weight will be forcing you metabolic processes within you body to burn more energy (calories).  Not only will you burn more calories while you do the exercise, but also with the after burn affect because of the intensity (relative to one rep max) of the exercise.

By increasing your absolute strength and utilizing that strength to move more weight for reps, you also stimulate the building of lean body tissue (a.k.a. muscle).  Remember, more muscle equals a boosted metabolism that will burn more calories even while at rest.

So now that you know why it’s important to build absolute strength to break through a fat loss and fitness plateau, here’s a simple method you can use to increase that absolute strength.  Check out the free workout video.

Fat Loss Increasing Tips

One of the things I remind my private clients and my FX Boot Camp participants is that fat loss follows fitness.  What I mean by this tip is that it is easier to burn fat a.k.a achieve weight loss (fat loss),a better looking, toned and athletic body if you’re actually physically fit, or by increasing your personal fitness level.  These aren’t fancy tips, but they’re very important in achieving your weight loss (fat loss) goals.

Many of the fad weight loss diets, and fad workout programs fail long term because they forget that fitness and health should come first. When you concentrate on becoming healthier and more fit, the natural side effect is that your body will naturally look healthier, more toned, fit and athletic.  Becoming healthier and more fit is the basis of the Fat X Diet and the Fat X Program

It is important to remember that just because you start a diet and you lose weight, that alone doesn’t mean you’re healthier.  In fact, you can be doing things to hurt your health, which in the long run can make it difficult to become fit and lose body fat.  What are those things that can cause weight loss but are unhealthy?  Well, for starters, you can be losing lean body tissue (muscle), which will slow down your metabolism.  A slow metabolism makes it easier for your body to store calories as body fat.

If you go on one of these fad diets, you can also be depriving your body of essential nutrients which can cause low energy levels along with other health issues.  If you’re not feeling good, and you’re energy levels are down, what are the chances you’re going to get a productive fitness boosting workout in?  And what’s the point of looking at the numbers on the scale drop, if you’re still flabby and now feel crappy as well.

The point of all this is that you should strive to become healthier.  Don’t worry about the numbers on a scale.  Get more fit and increase you’re fitness level by tracking your workouts and stats during these workouts.  Those numbers will tell the truth about how healthy and fit your are.  They will also tell the truth about how fit and healthy your are becoming.  Fat loss will follow fitness!

To recap, there are two tips here to improve fat loss.  Tip number one is to become healthier and more fit.  Tip number two is to track your workout numbers and stats as in the Fat X Program so that you stay on track to becoming healthier, more fit and or increasing your fitness level.

Xtreme Fat Loss Diet Review – Xtreme Fat Loss Diet Scam

Xtreme Fat Loss Diet Review – Xtreme Fat Loss Diet Scam. The Xtreme Fat Loss Diet is a 25 day rapid fat loss program that combines Cheat Days, Fast Days, Depletion Days, and numerous other “advanced”fat loss methods into a strategic five day cycle that is repeated five times over the course of the program. It will be no surprise to you to learn that certain foods are not too good for you if you’re aiming for fat loss.

Now, some of the foods that are bad for you and your figure are fairly obvious – cheeseburgers, pizzas dripping with cheese and fast food in general, you wouldn’t expect to play a major part in a calorie-controlled diet now would you?

The problem is that most of the foods that are a disaster if you’re looking for extreme fat loss are absolutely delicious aren’t they? But, you’ll be pleased to know that there are actually some foods that can will help you to lose weight.

Again, we probably all know a lot of the foods that we should be eating as part of a healthy diet – green leafy vegetables, whole grain bread and rice etc. We just need to be disciplined enough to eat them in sufficient quantities.

Protein, of course, is an essential part of nutrition but if you must eat meat to get it you should aim for lean cuts to ensure that you don’t ingest too much fat.

It is important that you lose weight in a healthy way – especially if you are looking to shed a fair amount of fat in a relatively short time period.

You should devote a reasonable amount of time to learn about the types of foodstuffs that help with weight loss. You should also learn how to combine these foods in a way that gives you variety in your diet. If you make your meals interesting you’ll obviously have much more chance of sticking to a diet. You’ll find a lot of very useful information on the Internet concerning the best nutritional value food choices.

Some example foods that are known to be able to help you lose weight include: strawberries, blueberries, apples and chives.

Now, one of the problems you will have to overcome is the fat-laden dressing or garnish. It’s absolutely no good sticking to healthy foods and healthy portions if you then drown them in artery-clogging sauces etc.

Remember, you must try to eat healthily whilst at the same time enjoying your food because you mustn’t look at a diet as a one-shot exercise. If you want to lose weight and keep it off then you’ll have to get used to the fact that this is a lifestyle choice.

Selling Weight Loss to Children [Are kids the next casualties in the diet wars?]

id="attachment_1196" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 600px"> href="http://www.thegreatfitnessexperiment.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/willywonka.jpg"> class="size-full wp-image-1196" title="Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie image" src="http://www.thegreatfitnessexperiment.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/willywonka.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="458" /> class="wp-caption-text">And yet Willy Wonka always managed to stay so slim…

“Tell me I’m not angry for no reason!!!” was the subject line on an e-mail from Gym Buddy Lindsey. I tried to imagine what would be so upsetting as to require the use of a double negative and extraneous punctuation.  That it continued with “I’m so pissed!!!!!!!!!!” only made me more intrigued. (And more entertained – you have to know Lindsey, she’s a very passionate person! We’re friends for good reason is all this tempest-in-a-teapot is saying.) She writes, “I just saw a commercial of a girl no older than fifteen talking about how she didn’t fit in at school because she was overweight, but “after joining this diet program, she fits in with friends.” I believe it’s wonderful to be healthy and to promote healthy habits, but by appealing to kids by saying they won’t fit in unless the scale says a smaller number is a blunt way of saying “you’ll never be good enough.””

I checked out the site of the popular diet company (so popular that if a local radio station doesn’t quit mentioning it every 5 minutes I’m going have to find a new morning show, AHEM) that she referenced and sure enough they have a whole section of their site dedicated to “ href="http://www.slimgenics.com/success/find/success-stories/young-adults">Young Adult Success Stories” with pictures of young – some very young – looking kids along with a blurb about how they feel after losing XX pounds. Oh, and of course their “before” and “after” weights are listed. Indeed, href="http://www.slimgenics.com/success/detail/144">one girl who looks about 14 writes, “Before I lost weight on the program I always thought I was going to be the “big one” in the crowd. I wanted to lose weight so I would have more self esteem and fit in with the other kids in my class. After losing 25 pounds on the program I am happier, healthier and feel more comfortable about being Me.”

My heart breaks for her. The teen years are transformative and also traumatic. On one hand, being the “fat kid” sucks. While I didn’t have this particular issue in high school – don’t worry I had lots of other things to shatter my self-esteem! – it doesn’t take much understanding to recognize how horribly many overweight teens are treated. MTV even has an entire show, “ href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/i_used_to_be_fat/series.jhtml">I Used To Be Fat“, dedicated to just this premise. No one can blame “Taylor T” for wanting to shed the pounds and fit in. But on the other hand, tying her ability to “be Me” to her weight is a very slippery slope and one that many an adult woman has wished they’d never started down. And of course there’s the issue of using teenagers to pimp weight-loss products. It’s one thing to see Kirstie Alley shake her moneymaker in the Jenny Craig commercials but quite another to see the sweet face of a teen awkwardly hunched in that trying-so-hard-to-look-casual way. Many of our “Me”s are so fragile when we’re young. Heck I even get a little worried when I see Jennifer Hudson schilling for Weight Watchers even though she’s technically an adult now.

The “obesity epidemic” is already one of the most controversial topics you can bring up but if you want to really rile people up talk about childhood obesity. Michelle Obama didn’t pick that as her platform on accident. Everyone from Jamie Oliver and his Food Revolution to the checker at your local grocery store who eyes all the boxes of Fruit Roll-Ups you are buying (I swear they were for a craft project for preschool! They cut shapes out of them! And then stick them to stuff! They’re very sticky!!) has an opinion about what we feed our kids and how to teach them about food.

In one corner you have the The Children Are Fine camp that advocate a more hands-off approach to kids’ weight. If a child is soothed with an ice cream bar then so be it, food is an emotional experience. And if a child chunks up a bit, well they’re probably going to hit a growth spurt soon. Plus the more you make food an issue the less able they are to listen to their natural hunger cues – something kids are born good at. At least until we train it out of them.

In the other corner you have the Early Intervention camp that points out the mental, physical and social toll that being overweight takes on a child and figures that the sooner you nip bad behavior in the bud the easier it will be to correct. Sure kids are good at choosing to eat what they need but our obesogenic environment can drown out their natural cues and so we need to teach them. Our society is so un-vigilant with food and exercise these days that parents and doctors feel they need to be hyper-vigilant, even if that means intervening as young as two. And after all, what’s wrong with teaching kids about healthy food and exercise?

No matter which methodology you subscribe to, the social impacts of being overweight can’t be ignored and so it makes sense from a marketing perspective to use that desire to be liked to lure in a whole new demographic of dieters into their multi-billion dollar machine. Orson Scott Card wrote a short story about what would happen if there were machines that fed you any kind of delectable food you wanted and then other machines that would magically make the accumulated fat disappear. How would society react if our weight was entirely under our control? In the story people stopped caring so much about who was fat or thin, mostly because it was so easy to be either. Of course, being Orson Scott Card, it also turned out that aliens had set up the magic machines and were using them to farm humans for fat which they then turned into energy, disposing of the humans once their fat potential had been drained. (There are a lot of societies disastrously lost to Science Fiction, just saying.) My point – besides the fact that Orson Scott Card rivals Ray Bradbury for writing deeply unsettling fiction (Don’t believe me? Read “The Shepard.” I still get a full body shiver every time I think about it.) – is that if the social stigma were taken away from being overweight then we’d be able to see using teens in diet ads for the ridiculous ploy that it is.

Honestly I still haven’t figured out which camp I’m in when it comes to teaching my kids about healthy eating. I vacillate between both extremes – I let my kids have doughnuts for breakfast this morning because a friend brought them over and I was too tired to object and yet there hasn’t been a fruit snack, can of pop or even white crackers in our house in years. (Nothing says great parenting like inconsistency!) But I do know that I want my kids to know that I will love, adore and accept them no matter what they weigh and using kids in diet advertisements feels like it undermines that message.

How do you feel about using kids in weight-loss advertisements? Is it providing a much-needed service helping teens get healthier or is it just one more way to make them feel bad about themselves? Do you prefer early intervention or a wait-and-see approach for kids? Do you have a favorite-yet-ookie Sci Fi writer??

A New Weight Loss Supplement: Water

The Institute for Public Health and Water Research sponsored a study to determine whether pre-meal water consumption reduces the number of calories consumed by overweight, obese adults.

The subjects included 24 adults with a mean age of 61.3 years and a body mass index of 34.3. Subjects were provided a standardized breakfast on two randomly assigned occasions.

Thirty minutes prior to the meal, subjects were given either a 500-mL (approx. 17 oz) water pre-load or no pre-load.

The subjects who were given the water pre-load consumed 13% fewer calories compared with those subjects not given the water pre-load.

The calorie reduction was not associated with age, sex, body mass index or typical fluid intake, which means for older, obese adults, water may be a universal tactic for reducing calorie consumption at meals.
It should be noted that a previous study of non-obese adults saw a 60kcal reduction in calories consumed over breakfast for older adults (age 60 – 80 years), but no reduction in calories consumed by younger adults in that study (age 21 – 35 years).

More research needs to be conducted to determine the long-term impact of a water pre-load in older, obese adults, as potentially it is possible that subjects may become adapted to the water pre-load over time.

However, as Alan Aragon points out in his Research Review (www.alanaragon.com/researchreview), from this research one can hypothesize that that water can potentially be as effective and even more effective than popular weight loss supplements Ephedrine and Conjugated Linoleic Acid:

Train hard; stay strong.

Peace.
