Safeway’s Simple Nutrition Review & Giveaway

If you’ve been to Safeway recently, you may have noticed new tags on their shelves.  These tags are part of their Simple Nutrition program which is designed to help you make better nutrition choices.  It includes a “Gluten Free” tag category.  You can view and read about the other shelf tags here.

It is important to note that the gluten-free category is defined by products that are identified as gluten-free by the manufacturer.   Since there are no laws currently regulating the use of the term “gluten free” on labels, you still need to use caution and read labels.

Also, keep in mind that many products at the grocery store are gluten free, but are not identified as such by the manufacturer, and therefore will not have a gluten free tag such as this pineapple.

The tags can be helpful, particularly for people new to the gluten-free diet.  While I have never known any ketchup to contain gluten, it might be helpful to some to see that a particular brand is identified as gluten free by the manufacturer.

It’s probably more helpful with items that do often contain gluten, such as frosting.  Many cans of frosting have wheat listed on the label, but some brands are gluten free.  In years past I have stood in the isle reading lots of frosting labels.  Having tags that identify gluten-free items does not eliminate the need to read labels, but it narrows down how many you need to read.

There is also the possibility that an item will be tagged wrong or that you will misunderstand which product the label is referring to.  So please, don’t depend entirely on these labels.  They should be a time saving guide but not your sole source of information for determining if a product is gluten free.

Simple Ranchy Breaded Fish Fillets

Prep Time: 15 Min
Cook Time: 10 Min
Ready In: 25 Min
Original Recipe Yield 4 servings 
Ingredients
3/4 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1 (1 ounce) package dry Ranch-style dressing mix
2 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 pound tilapia fillets
2 teaspoons butter
Directions
Place the bread crumbs in a bowl. In a shallow dish, mix the dressing mix and oil to form a paste. Coat the tilapia fillets with the paste, then dredge in the bread crumbs to lightly coat.
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Place the fillets in the skillet, and cook 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and easily flaked with a fork.

Fitness Hack: How to Run Faster [5 Simple Tips]

Running in heels may make you stylish (or insane) but they won’t make you faster.

Two weeks ago found me feeling sorry for myself on Twitter, complaining about my slow-for-me mile time. When I asked for tips to run a faster mile I got a ton of good information. (And also a throw-down – Reader Taylor challenged me to a race duel. He kicked my trash. Technically I owe him a smoothie but knowing how disgusting my shakes are I’m pretty sure he’s going to pass on that.) Speedy runners and blog friends Adam from The Boring Runner and Tricia from Endurance Isn’t Only Physical took me under their well-muscled wing.

While the tips didn’t help me then – I was looking to improve my mile time in, like, 3 days (instant gratification!) for the fit blogger competition – they certainly are helping me now. Today I ran a mile in 5 minutes! …Broken into 5 one-minute chunks, that is. Psych! I’m not that speedy yet but being able to run one minute at 12 mph five times felt pretty awesome so I’ll take it. Plus, Gym Buddy Allison talked all the Gym Buddies into signing up for the Lucky 7 (7K) race in March so I need to get my sea legs back. (Reasoning: It has such great race swag!)
Maybe you’ve found yourself in the same spot: you’ve been running for years and you have a nice comfy pace but rather than being middle of the pack, maybe you want to try for upper-middle – you know, the spot where people start throwing elbows or edging you out. Or perhaps you’re new to running and you’d just like to pick up the pace a little for your next 5K so the sweeper truck isn’t hot on your heels. There’s a ton of information out there for runners looking to increase their distance, but not as much for increasing your speed.
Charlotte’s Tips for Running Faster (Gleaned from people much, much smarter than me.)
1. Get chased by a hippo. Belying their placid bovine appearance, these water mammals are a) really mean and b) can run faster than 30 miles per hour. If those teeth coming after you aren’t enough incentive to pick up the pace, then I can’t help you.
1. (For real now.) Take smaller steps. It seems counter-intuitive right? Whenever I “run fast” I used to take huge leaping strides thinking that I was covering more ground. Not so, says Adam who has cut his marathon time by 45 minutes over the past two years, “Shortening your stride is going to lower the overall effort as well as reduce the pounding on your legs. It takes a lot of force/energy to push off and shoot yourself forward in large leaps. (This is why chi-running is so popular.) However in the short term, it raises your heart rate.”
2. Mix it up. No matter how short or long your run is you will eventually reach a point where you just feel like you can’t do it any more. Some runners start counting their steps or repeating a mantra. Others play around with their foot strike, stride, breathing or posture. Whatever it takes to distract yourself from the pain, do it! Half of running is mental and you need a strategy to keep your head in the game.
3. Tempo runs. A tempo run is a run that you do at a speed you could hold for an hour. So you’re not going full out but still pretty hard. Adam explains, “These runs will put you at the edge of threshold, but will not get you into the point of lactic acid buildup. So, it trains your body to flush it out acid while still outputting at a high level. Important for your mile (to a certain extent) but vital for your 7K and longer races.”
4. Amp up the music. In The Times (UK) Dr Costas Karageorghis “calls music sport’s “legal drug”, capable of increasing performance by 20 per cent while reducing an athlete’s perception of effort by 10 per cent.” The trick is to pick music with a tempo that matches how fast you want to run. 2000m world record-holder Haile Gilbrselassie famously used the song Scatman to pace himself during his record-breaking run. (Side note: Scatman would run me right off the track in search of a vat of water to dunk my head in to drown out the annoying techno. Nails, meet chalkboard. But to each his own!)
5. Interval workouts. If you want to get faster, you’re going to have to do some speedwork. For most runners this is the most painful part of the process as it requires you to push yourself to your max. Several of the Gym Buddies would rather run 5 miles at a moderate pace than do Tabata intervals for 5 minutes. (Not that that gets them out of it!) The great thing about interval workouts though is they’re generally pretty short. The exact interval that is best for you depends on the length of race you’re training for but the general idea is to alternate stretches of sprinting with stretches of jogging.
There was one tip listed on most websites that did not make my list: lose weight. People often think that running will give you that professional runner’s body but in my experience it’s the other way around. People with that greyhound body type are naturally very fast runners. I’m not saying that you can’t lose weight while running – it’s possible although not as easy as people think – nor am I saying that pro runners don’t work hard for their skills. I’m just saying that lighter people run faster because their bodies are more efficient for running. But losing weight (and all the eating-disorder shenanigans that brings up for me) just to lower my mile time is not a sacrifice I’m willing to make. It’s up to you if this tip makes your list for running faster.

Simple Summer Diet Detox Cleansing Recipe

What comes with summer besides bikinis and suntans and long days lounging on the beach? Fresh Fruit.

Here is my simple method to take advantage of all the wonderful bounty of summer fresh fruit.

For one thing, most the summer I have a fruit only day every week. Yep! just take whatever favorites I am in the mood for and pick a day and eat nothing else. By the way you can just forget all those goofy colon cleanse pills and junk. With this method you will never need them

My not officially scientific experiment with those over priced colon cleansing kits is when I take them they barely change anything. Almost the same amount of stuff comes out. That is because my healthy diet and active life keeps me from building up a lot of junk. Now you can save some money too, and just go buy more fresh food with it. Make an investment in your health bank, your body.

At least once every summer I set up a 3 day fruit detox cleanse.

The day before and the day after I make sure I have a huge green salad and use olive oil and season it with spices right off my rack, like yummy pesto seasoning and a splash of lemon juice.

Now you have to wrap your brain around the idea of only fruit for 3 whole days. I find it helps to pick a variety. I love nectarines, plums, and cantalope very much so I get a lot of those.

Look for the juicy types of fruit. Grapes, water mellon, strawberries, (is your mouth watering?). Get plenty and there is a high possibility you will finish the diet a few pounds lighter.

Every day I drink water with a splash of lemon juice. I buy Lemon Juice in the bottle by the quart. Some may say this is cheating but when it is cold and ready to easily use it is more likely I will do it. Extra glasses of this are also on the 3 day summer fruit diet detox cleansing recipe.

These are very delicious foods. I think a healthy diet can be a fun and tasty experience. If you do find during the detox that you are just craving some cooked food let me share my secret weakness killer. Hot Broth. Chicken or even beef broth, a big glass while sitting down to really appreciate and enjoy it will satisfy that craving and make it easy to complete the 3 days.

Stress Quick Fix: Three Simple Relaxation Techniques for Instant Calm


I like quick and easy especially in the mist of a serious dose of stress. Often times, when in the mist of a stressful moment you may not be able to focus long enough to get yourself to a better place. So it is helpful if relief is brief and instant.

Three techniques which I’ve found useful are:

1. The Drum Method: I got this method from somewhere that I can’t recall right now, and I have given it a name of my own reflective of what it is. Perhaps you may need to use this technique when you’re alone when you are worrying or filled with overwhelming emotions. You simply tap your body at various points with the palms of both hands as if you were “drumming” your entire body. It may seem silly at first, but this technique offers a much needed distraction from whatever you’re focusing and concerned about in that moment.

2. The Focused Breathing Method: This method is widely utilize in many self-development books. It is not just about taking in a few deep breathes although just doing this is helpful. There is a technique to focused breathing. First off take in a deep breathe through the nose on the count of four while extending the stomach. Hold for four seconds and breathe out through the mouth on the count of four while pulling in the stomach to its original relaxed position. On the out breath you want it be as if you were saying aaahhhh… and gently just letting the breath out.

Stomach centered breathing with less movement of the chest is said to be more natural to the way we normally breathe with the stomach going in and out. Just observe a baby or a loved one while they are sleeping.

2. The Feather Stroke Method: I got this method from a cute and charming book called The Little Book of Calm which has many wonderful techniques for instant calm. Again I have given the method a catchy name. The technique involves stroking the back of your non-dominant hand with the finger tips of the dominant hand using a feather-light trail from the base of the non-dominant hand by the wrist to the end of the fingers. This is surprisingly relaxing and takes little time or effort.

Emotional well being doesn’t have to be a process needing to be planned beforehand, because it is so time consuming. It can and should be simple and in the moment as is with every part of the Savvy Non-Dieter™ Lifestyle.

Simple Spring Salads

Strawberry-Arugula Salad

1 pint strawberries, sliced
1 bunch arugula

Vinaigrette:
1/4 C fresh lime juice
1 tsp local raw honey
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/4 C extra virgin olive oil
handful of freshly torn mint leaves
freshly ground pepper to taste

To prepare the vinaigrette, combine all ingredients in a jar. Close tightly and shake vigorously to combine. Of course, you can whisk the ingredients in a small bowl, but I think it’s much more fun to shake it up, baby.

Toss arugula and the red springtime jewels in a large bowl. Drizzle dressing over top.

This salad is a taste sensation – the bitterness of the greens, the sweetness of the berries, the tang of the dressing – it’s got it all going on!

Fennel-Lemon Salad

1 fennel bulb, shaved thin with a mandoline
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
fresh thyme leaves, chopped
fresh parsley, chopped

Remove the frilly end of the fennel and trim the root. Slice thinly crosswise – here’s where the mandoline comes in to play.

Whisk olive oil, lemon juice, thyme and parsley in a salad bowl until blended. Add  the sliced fennel and toss until coated. Let stand at room temperature at least 30 minutes before serving.

You’ll have to trust me on this one. The lemon perfectly complements the slight licorice of the fennel. Thyme and parsley provide a nice accent.

Pineapple-Spinach Salad

1 pineapple, quartered and sliced
1 bunch fresh spinach
1/2 red onion, sliced
1/2 C raw almonds

Vinaigrette:
3 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 C extra virgin olive oil
sea salt + freshly ground pepper to taste

I’d actually recommend using a blender to make the balsamic vinaigrette. It will produce a thicker dressing.

Toss all ingredients in a bowl and serve immediately.
