The Truth About the hCG Diet, Strange Ways to Save Money and other dubious advice from me this week

I love words. It’s no secret. And no words ever make me laugh harder than unintentional autocorrects. My personal best: I once tried to text a friend “don’t be so catastrophic” but after my phone mangled it, it came out “go lick cats a** ” She texted back, “That is like the worst advice ever.” There isn’t an LOL-ism to show how hard I laughed. Anyhow, if you need a giggle, check out Darnyouautocorrect.com

In other wordy news, not only did I publish my first newspaper feature this week and get profiled in the same paper but I also wrote some stuff. A lot of stuff. Enjoy! Or skip it and go straight to autocorrect and laugh yourself silly. It’s Friday!

Fitness Stuff:

10 Tips From People Whose Body Is Their Career. My personal fave was Kara Goucher, elite marathoner and Olympian, who said, “”I used to be super restrictive about what I ate and watched everything I put into my mouth. Then I went the other way and ate a little bit too much of everything. Now, I’m in a healthier place. No food is off limits—if I tell myself I can’t have something, I’m way more likely to eat the entire container than if I allow myself to just have some. So I eat healthy most of the time, but if I want dessert, or a glass of wine, I have it!” Even elite athletes like intuitive eating!

8 Reasons Why You Should Lift Heavy Weights. Seriously ladies, there are so many great mental and physical benefits of lifting heavy! Plus, then you’ll know that when someone says “Hey, nice rack!” that they actually are complimenting your lifting form. Usually.

7 Unknown Spots to Score Affordable Workout Clothes. Did you know you can make your own yoga capris out of a large t-shirt? Or that Dancewear Solutions isn’t just for dancers (and has the cutest tanks for less than $15)? Be your own Fitshonista. Yeah, okay, fitshonista is never going to catch on.

The Truth About the hCG Diet Plan. Remember how I said the surest way to make people mad is to rip on their fave diet plan? Well, keep in mind that it was the FDA who called this one “dangerous, illegal and fraudulent.” Not that I’m a huge fan of it either.

Bloggers Reveal The #1 Best Get Healthy Tip They’ve Ever Gotten. And I win an award for the wordiest headline ever written! Yay me! (Seriously, is there a class for writing good headlines? Because I need one. Now.)

And for a change, I’m actually in the piece instead of writing it. Want to check out my slightly embarrassing choices for workout songs? (Yes I’m a 33-year-old mom who loves Pitbul. I have no idea how a short, bald man can be so sexy but there you go.) I’ve also recently discovered Lindi Ortega (video embedded below) and you should see me run to this one – I can’t help but sing out loud! Yep, I’m that girl. Bloggers Reveal: What’s on my workout playlist.

Parenting Stuff

Great Mom Debate: Have you made your kids write their thank-you cards yet? Here’s the thing about thank-you cards: they’re a lot of work for the parents. I know, I know, we’re raising courteous human beings and all. I do it. I just whine a lot.

When Babies Get Grabby: 5 ways that babies (adorably) make you a flasher. President Obama recently demonstrated what to do when one is “fish-hooked” by a tiny one. Seriously, I’ve watched this video 10 times now and I still go “awwww…!”

Moms’ 10 Weirdest Tips for Saving Money. I have smart mommy friends. But the thing that most amused me about this piece were the comments. Half the people were like “Wha…? These are the weirdest tips ever! Who does this crap??” and the other half were like “These tips aren’t weird! I was promised weird! Where are the sewer alligators dangit?!”

Kids bad reactions to hilarious gift giving. I can’t remember if I already linked this one here but the video is so funny, it’s worth watching twice;)
Have you ever had a really awful autocorrect?? Do you have a new favorite workout song?

This MIA Blogger Stuff HAS GOTTA STOP!

Hello Kittens. Don’t you love John Stutz’s work? OMG. I really want to get that book. Check out his site when you need some inspiration.

Now- y’all know that my BIGGEST CHALLENGE toward the end of this year has been my schedule. And this kind of falls in line with me getting my blogs done too. When I put my work first and come into my office in the morning and start working, reading emails, responding to emails, etc. it becomes a vortex and I never leave. I’ve shared with you all that I’m trying to transition to leaving my mornings OPEN for ME.

Why is this so difficult? Why do I still come in here and start working? Then rush off to “squeeze in my workout”? Now- I will say this, this week I have kicked butt. I worked out Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, took Thursday off and now Friday, I am heading in to do my workout.

That’s right. I’m NOT one of those people that hates working out. I love it. I’ve simply been giving too much time to everything else and everyone else and leaving me last. That can’t happen. I think I found a solution.

In the morning, I will NOT open up Outlook until I’ve done my workout. Period. No emails until I’ve done my workout. That means I don’t get caught up in the madness. It can wait. I deserve my time. If I’m working until 8-9pm most nights, I deserve my mornings.

Here is my vlog from the other day. I’m wearing another top from DA Active, who clearly I have become quite attached to. Check them out by CLICKING HERE. DA Active, I love thee.

Now. I’m off to do my workout. I have DOMS all over this week and I love it! LOVE IT! Today will be cardio and shoulders. WOOT!

What’s YOUR WORKOUT today? Have you started off 2012 right? Are you making PROGRESS OR EXCUSES??

Just TRY to stop this.

It is almost impossible for me to feel better or more excited on January 1st than I do today. It’s like all the planets have aligned….it just feels like everything has fallen into place and I’m so READY. Sometimes, it doesn’t happen when we want it– for whatever reason, we don’t put it all together, all the knowledge that we’ve obtained, put together with the action plan that works for our life….sometimes it just takes a while to get your mind in the right place.

WHATEVER the reason, it’s my season of life. NOW.

Isn’t this perfect? So true.

Today I woke up rested and ready to go! I had a great workout- I did Taebo Amped (review to follow tomorrow with my post-workout vlog) followed by some bands for my upper body: I did the moves my Physical Therapist taught me to do. Kids, my shoulder has gotten SO MUCH BETTER!!! I’m so excited!!

Here’s another funny thing. I am so full. I had (Post-Workout) 2 Turkey Meatloaf Muffins with some green beans. Then I had a protein shake (I’ve been using the GNC AMP Chocolate protein powder with a frozen banana, Chia Seeds and Almond Milk) and a cup of coffee while I was roasting some veggies. OMG! Call me clueless but I don’t know that I’ve roasted veggies like this before but they were soooo amazing it was almost hard to stop noshing on them- I did Cauliflower, Broccoli, and Asparagus– tossed with a little olive oil, salt, pepper and some parmesan cheese (yes, the kind in a plastic jar, ok?). UnREAL how good and filling. I have a sweet potato out of the oven and I can’t even eat it I’m so full right now. A bit later I’m going to have that sweet potato with some Tilapia. MMMM.

What I learned about FOOD last year is that yes, a piece of pizza will always sound great. So will a piece of red velvet cake. But- no one REALLY wants to eat that every day. And when we get creative with food, there are so many good for us choices, it’s hard to really WHINE about eating for our health. I mean, we have a zillion choices, a zillion!! Get creative!!

Here’s my pre-workout ramble-on-a-thon- you’ll notice my new top from DA Active. Heavens to Betsy folks. I did not plan to do a review in this vlog but I must tell you, I am wowed by the selection they have and by the ULTRA QUALITY of the fabric and craftmanship…..these clothes are NICE. I mean, I’m so excited. I’ll do a more detailed review later but check them out BY CLICKING HERE.

Disclosure: DA Active sent me some of their clothing line to wear- they did not require me or pay me to review their clothes, these opinions are my own. And I might be raving about them for a WHILE. OMG.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: How do you feel on this first day of 2012? How do you feel about this year? Ready??

Acne Treatment: Make This Acne Serum Treatment At Home!

Read full story on The Green Beauty Guide

My acne sometime comes back. It’s not a really full-blown acne, but it’s bad enough to peek from underneath the mineral makeup and it’s inflamed enough to make me reach for the old time-tested acne fighters: the Skinsaver Wash (I was too proud to reach for the Petite Marie Organics products, so I made a cleanser myself in the lab today), and a blend of essential oils in the base of argan and thistle oils which are excellent for oily skin.

The blend worked so well, I think of releasing it as an Acne Serum in Petite Marie Organics line. After a series of tests, of course.

Here’s the recipe:

INGREDIENTS (in metric) (enough for 2-3 months of daily use)

10 ml argan oil

5 ml thistle oil

5 ml castor seed oil

30 drops tea tree oil

15 drops niaouli oil

10 drops coleus forshkolii oil

10 drops mustard seed oil

5 drops cloves oil

5 drops rosewood oil

5 drops sandalwood oil

5 drops jasmine oil

5 drops of garlic juice squeezed from 5 cloves of garlic

METHOD

Really simple: mix the oils in a shallow bowl with a spout. Press the garlic in the presser really well to extract the juice, then let it drop into the mixture. Stir well and transfer into a bottle with a narrow opening or better yet a bottle with a pippette. The smell came out to be quite pleasant, with a hint of spicy herbals and very, very woodsy.

However, it’s nearly unnoticeable after a few minutes of wearing.

APPLICATION:

I’d recommend applying the mix at bedtime. And no, the garlic in this serum doesn’t make you smell like garlic bread at all.

My Gift This Christmas: Learning to let go of past mistakes

Sorry, couldn’t resist! Is this not the saddest holiday card ever? Blue Christmas indeed. And they made Kim stand next to an empty chair!!

“It’s the hap- hap- iest season of all!” Unless, you know, it isn’t. The holidays can be a wonderful time but for a lot of people they can also be a difficult time made even more poignant by all the well-intended cheer, gifts and hippopotamuses getting thrown around. And this year I’m one of those people. For reasons I’m not quite ready to go into on here (mostly because I haven’t got enough distance from them to articulate them in a non-hysterical way), the past few weeks have been really hard. A constantly churning stomach, clenched jaw, nightmares and PTSD-induced panic attacks have been de rigeur. And crying. Lots and lots of crying.  (And not just because I bought a Costco-sized jar of kimchi that exploded and I can now smell in every single room in my house.)

At first, I’ll admit to a bit of Grinch-i-tude. When you are suffering, the holidays can make you feel like a stained glass window… that someone threw a brick through. But I’ve come to realize that both the pain and the timing of this are a wonderful gift. Indeed, while I’ve always been a Christmas person in the past - I love giving gifts! I love my kids’ excitement! I love ghetto cookies! – this year the ache has made me profoundly grateful for it in a way I have not been in the past.  While I can’t tell you the why yet (I’m sorry! I hate it when people do that too!) I want to tell you the how. Because I know I’m not the only one hurting this year.

My gifts this season:

1. Understanding that pain means growth. Sometimes you have to be broken down before you can be built back up. And this destruction is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It means holding up every thing that I believe about myself to the light and willing myself not to look away, even when it hurts so much it takes my breath away. But I can’t change to be the person I hope to become if I don’t get rid of the dysfunctional parts of the person I am now. While these growing pains have been far more intense than I had expected, this needed to happen.

2. Being surrounded by loved ones. At first, I didn’t want to tell anyone – not in real life and not on the Internet – because something triggered an avalanche of difficult memories and I felt buried under the weight of the shame and guilt that I’ve been holding on to for years. I’ve always thought that if people really knew me they wouldn’t love me and so I tried really hard to hold it all together (must! control! everything!). But I’m a terrible actress and I wear all my emotions on my sleeve so now I’m just embracing falling apart. And you know what I’ve discovered? Whether it’s the spirit of the holiday season or that they’ve always been there and I just haven’t trusted them enough – I have a lot of people waiting to catch me.

3. Being on the receiving end of a lot of service. Part of opening my dark places to the light means letting other people see them and I am overwhelmed by the compassion, understanding and love people have shown me: My husband who loves me unconditionally, the bishop at my church (in LDS parlance a bishop is similar to a pastor or rabbi or other clergy person) who spent a gut-wrenching hour and a half listening to me, my fantastic therapist who knows when to push and when to listen, my friends who have rallied around me even though I can’t answer their questions yet, my sister who calls every day to check on me.  Even my children help. Yesterday sweet little Jelly Bean came and sat on my lap and asked “Mama sad?” When I nodded, she brought me her favorite doll and blanket and then did a little sympathy whimper. And their sacrifice means even more to me because it doesn’t get any busier than the holiday season.

4. Being able to give a lot of service. The best way to put our problems in perspective is to help someone else with theirs and this year I’ve been given some amazing opportunities to be that person for others. It amazes me how quickly I can go from heart break to joy and how thin the line really is that separates them. You can’t have one without the other. Somehow just realizing this is part and parcel of the whole human experience makes me feel less alone in it.

5. The baby in the manger. If you are not religious, feel free to skip this part but I would feel remiss if I didn’t give thanks for my most precious gift of all this Christmas: the miracle of a tiny baby born in the humblest of circumstances who grew to be the greatest man who ever lived. And then who chose to die, for me, so that I would not have to pay for my mistakes the rest of my life. This year I’m accepting that gift. I’ve made a lot of mistakes. A lot. And I have a hard time letting them go. (Because it’s so much fun raking myself over the coals? Dunno, still trying to figure this one out.) But it’s time to give them back to the One who has been waiting to carry them for me all along so that I can move on. And make more mistakes to learn from, yay! I love doing things the hard way!

Life is messy.  And I’ll admit I’m a little afraid to show you my messy life right now but here it is. If you are having a rough go of it this year too, know you are not alone. My heart goes out to you and I hope you find comfort and peace, even if it’s just in knowing that I too have refused to listen to any carols because I’m just not feeling it. And if you are having a wonderful holiday, know that I love you even more for it – your happiness gives me hope and makes me smile. I love you guys and I am ever grateful for all the love you’ve given me back!

Anyone else have a hard time letting go of past mistakes? What is your favorite gift (given or received) this holiday season? Anyone else laugh themselves silly when they saw the Kardashian Family Christmas Card?

Help! I’m stuck at this weight.

Hi, I’m hoping you can help me because I’ve tried everything and I just can’t lose weight! I am a 32-year old mother of two, 5’2″ tall and 130 pounds. I’ve tried low-calorie diets but stopped because I was told I was not eating enough; exercising 30 minutes a day and increased to 60 minutes because of no results; I switched to a more active job, and gave up drinking soda. I’ve tried all of this for months and have not lost a pound! What is going on? The really odd thing is that I can eat huge amounts of chocolate, soda, steak, etc and won’t gain any weight. So really my weight is very “stuck”. I can’t gain it, I can’t lose it.I would really appreciate any advice you can give me because I really have no idea what to do at this point. Even my family and friends are amazed I haven’t lost a pound after witnessing all my hard work.
Jen S.

Dear Jen,

I know how frustrating this can be!
I wonder for how long, and how consistently, you’ve stuck with any of these low-calorie diets or hour daily work-outs? If you eat less and exercise consistently (especially for an hour, 5 days a week) for a whole month with no exceptions, you will probably see results. I would suggest you try this for 30 days, while keeping a food diary.
You see, people tend to remember their hard work, and brush off an occasional slip or treat. So we end up focusing on all the working out and all the smart lunches, but ignoring the cookies someone brought in to work, the dessert for the special occasion, the 3 days we didn’t feel like working out last week, and the quart of ice cream we had to have due to cravings.
Since you know you can have huge amounts of chocolate, soda, and steak, I assume you have been doing this! You won’t notice weight gain from eating 1000 calories more or less over a few days, but adding those calories in to your diet will certainly negate any results you’ve had!
Because of your small size you can’t expect to lose more than about 1/2 pound a week, even with a reasonable (1200-1500) calorie restriction and daily exercise.
So here’s my suggestion: Try again for 30 days in a row (note any exceptions in your food journal as they are bound to occur!) to eat a reasonably low calorie level, exercise an hour a day (as often as possible) and see if you don’t get 2 pounds off. I know it’s slow-going, but in the mean time you’ll be developing great eating and exercise habits, and when you stick with those, the rest of the weight will come off too!

Keep in touch to let me know how it goes :)

Why This Grain-Eating Girl Loves The Primal Blueprint [The nutrition question I still can't answer]

I was a modern vegetarian runner, he was a paleolithic meat-loving functional exerciser – when we first met, we could not have been more different. Paleo/Primal style eating now has quite a few different flavors now but five years ago, it was new and with its exclusion of all grains, was also quite controversial. Whether it was from a genuine interest in the science behind this new philosophy or because I’ve always had a thing for men who want me to change everything I am to be with them, I decided to give it a try. As those of you who’ve been with me since the beginning know, I’ve done the 30-day Primal Blueprint challenge, as described by Mark Sisson, three times now. Twice I wrote about my experiences and it got a whole chapter in my first book. Short version: It did not go well for me. And yet Mark Sisson and his site Mark’s Daily Apply remain one of my favorite sources for intelligent, well-researched health and fitness information. Here’s why:

1. Don’t fear the dietary fat. When I first started my journey to lose the baby weight after my 2nd son was born, the country was still in the schizophrenic grip of the low-fat diet espoused by the American Heart Association colliding with the low-carb craze. I had no idea what the best way to eat was and had grown up priding myself on minimal fat intake. Reading Mark’s articles on the benefits of fat – saturated included! – were a huge paradigm shift for me. I started incorporating more fat into my diet and have seen physical and mental benefits because of it.

2. Whole foods rule. There was a time in my life that I thought a low-carb protein bar was the healthiest thing I could eat. Reading The Primal Blueprint (among other books and sites) helped me change my focus from tracking macronutrients to being more concerned about eating foods in their most natural form.

3. Chronic cardio is not the best way to exercise. This last point has been life-changing for me and I have Rachel Cosgrove and Mark Sisson to thank equally for this. Coming fresh off my double-cardio Experiment (it was exactly what it sounds like and ended with a stress fracture, a burgeoning eating disorder and a gain of 10 pounds), I came across Mark’s article “Case against cardio” based on his experiences as an elite triathlete. In it, he dismantles the conventional wisdom that the best way to get fit is to run, cycle, swim or do some other form of traditional “cardio”. He isn’t saying that we shouldn’t ever run again, but he is saying that continually pushing through long punishing workouts can be very detrimental to your health.

The Whole Grains Thing

Now, back to the whole “it didn’t end well for me” part. The Primal Blueprint asserts that humans have not evolved enough yet to eat grains and because of this eating grains causes all kinds of problems from systemic inflammation to allergies to bloating to chronic fatigue syndrome. The science from Sisson, Taubes, Wolfe, Eades and others is compelling (and trust me I have read it all. Twice.) and I won’t say they’re wrong on this. Unfortunately I also can’t say they are right. For me this is the who-killed-JFK of nutrition. For every Mark Sisson success story, there is a Bill Pearl (a vegan bodybuilder) rebuttal. I’ve gone back and forth on this so many times that I think I may just have to conclude that I’ll never know.

What I do know is that every time I have tried to remove all grains from my diet I have felt worse and not better. Whether that’s because of my mental issues (restricting makes me nutso) or because I’m addicted to carbs (taking out whole grains always leads to me bingeing on sugar) or perhaps that I’m half ruminant and more evolved than other humans, it doesn’t work for me. It may be a matter of finding the nuance – i.e. that genetically engineered wheat is bad but “ancient” grains are good – or it may just be time for me to let this one go. Honestly I eat very few processed grains – my servings are things like a handful of barley thrown in soup or cracked wheat berries on salad – and my body seems to like it. It’s kind of like when I quit being a vegetarian. I still eat a lot of vegetarian meals but now I don’t worry about craving the occasional piece of meat. Intuitive Eating works for me and I’m healthy and happy.

21-Day Primal Challenge

Grain issues aside, I have learned a ton of valuable things from Mark Sisson. In addition to the three big ones above, I’ve gotten a ton of recipes off his site (including how to cook offal), got workout ideas and even competed in a brain challenge but my favorite thing about his writing is how well-researched it is. Not many people take the time to delve into the science themselves and examine the data and the conclusions and I have learned in depth about everything from what blood pressure readings really are to understanding the glucose pathway. And I will add that he has been nothing but kind and patient with me in our e-mail exchanges.

So I was super excited to see he just launched his newest book The Primal Blueprint 21-Day Total Body Transformation. I haven’t read it yet but I’m sure it is up to his usual high standard and I can’t wait to check it out. This week only (10/18-10/24) Mark is offering a whole bunch of freebies to people who buy his book. If you are already Primal/Paleo or just curious, definitely check out his new book! And be sure to read his site - it’s a goldmine of information even if, like me, you’re not primal.

Do you have a nutrition or fitness question that you just can’t resolve no matter how much you read up about it? Have any of you tried primal or paleo style eating?

Disclosure: The above link is an Amazon affiliate link so I do get a small kickback (a few cents) if you buy Mark’s book through my site – this is not the reason I am promoting his book however.

This is DEFINITELY a TGIF day!

Happy Friday Y’All!! What a crazy day we had yesterday! HOLY COW. I was supposed to be in Pittsburgh yesterday returning today but suffice it to say there was maybe a Halloween curse on O’Hare yesterday. We got all checked in at the airport and – long story short – got booted from our flight and no other flights heading that way. I had a seriously sad face on and in all of my years of travel, I have never deal with THAT kind of drama. So annoying. Luckily we were able to proceed with our meeting virtually but still! ;-(

Here is my very impromptu vlog from yesterday or the day before I guess– but I’m talking about No Excuses…and how I’m working hard to overcome that. This is the ONLY way to reach your goals people– not to let excuses creep in and ruin your progress!

That Physique 57 workout is still making my glutes scream. ;-) But that’s good. That’s very very good.

I went to the grocery store today and bought a boatload of ingredients for some of my new slow cooker recipes. Psyched to try some.

DANG that looks amazing!! It’s absolutely beautiful Fall weather out…I want to just get outside and go for a long walk over the weekend. Fall is my FAVORITE season too.

This week has been a really good start on getting back to serious consistency in my workouts. I had great workouts on Sunday and Monday, skipped Tuesday, Kicked it on Wednesday- yesterday sadly was a nightmare day and yes I could have worked out- but I had a Twitter party last night and frankly- felt a cold coming on. Went to bed with Excedrin PM and slept IN until 9am. Feel 200% better today and now I’m about to go NUTTY on a workout.

And I’m a bit concerned that my left shoulder is acting funny again.

Putting this up today as a reminder- JUST START. NO EXCUSES. JUST START. DO THIS EVERY DAY- AND REPEAT AGAIN TOMORROW.

Question of the day: What is your favorite Fall-Weather food?

The Truth About Fitness Models [Baby, I was born this way?]

I love this ad! I bet Death is a smoker.

Everything I learned about fitness models I learned from a stripper. Well, an ex-stripper. She was at the book-signing table next to me at local event a while back and because neither of us were selling any books (book signing = sitting and trying not to cry into the water you had to buy for $5), we ended up chatting most of the night. First, I learned a lot about the stripping business as she was selling a book about how to apply stripping principles to the business world (they have more in common than you’d think). My favorite story, included in her chapter on real estate: she used to tell her customers she had three kids and that that night she’d had to feed them “ketchup soup” because “mommy has no money.” She never had children. And she made a crap ton of money.

But as soon as she heard that I write for Shape and do workout slideshows for Shape.com, she was on a one-woman mission. Despite me telling her repeatedly that I have zero input on casting models for the magazine (ZERO), she kept trying to convince me to get her friend, an aspiring fitness model, in the magazine.

“She’s got the best body I’ve ever seen!” she gushed – an accolade I took seriously considering how many female bodies she’d likely seen over the years.

“What kind of workouts does she do?” I asked out of curiosity. (For the record, I also asked her what kind of workouts she did (answer: nothing) and if stripping was a good workout (answer: pole, yes. Lap dancing, not so much.))

“Oh she can do whatever you want her to! She’s amazing!”

I considered repeating for the tenth time that I couldn’t help her friend but instead asked, “No, I mean what kind of training does she do to stay in such great shape?”

“Oh, not much actually. She runs sometimes. I kind of hate her.” This, coming from a woman so gorgeous that when she said she was in her 40′s I demanded to see her ID as I would have guessed she was 25. I kind of hated the both of them.  ”She was pretty much born that gorgeous.”

And there it was. The answer to one of the perennial fitness questions: Does your training determine your body shape or does your body shape determine your training? Also known as, “Will I get a ‘dancer’s body’ by dancing?”

This conversation was brought back to mind as I was reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women (aff) for September’s Great Fitness Experiment (update: still on stage 2, going great!). The main author, Lou Schuler, has been an editor of several major fitness magazines (Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness) and written for pretty much all the others so he’s seen a lot of fitness models in his day. And he has an entire section devoted to, “the fallacious notion that by doing a particular person’s workout , they can have a physique like that person.”

He writes, “Let’s say you accept the impossibility of developing a celebrity’s proportions without being a clone of that celebrity. Chances are, you still believe you can achieve a ‘type’ of physique if you train like people who have that type.

“Magazines feed this notion, rarely stated in so many words, by showing tall, lean models doing workouts that promise readers a long, lean physique. Of course this makes perfect sense from the magazine’s point of view. They aren’t going to sell many copies if they show short, chunky women in their workout features. But you have to understand that the models doing the workouts are just that. They were cast by photo editors specifically because they already have what the feature promises. If the exercises in the feature are unique, you can bet the model is doing them for the first time. She had that body when she walked in the door of the studio, and she’ll still have it when she walks out. That’s why she’s a model.

“An obvious point? Okay. But raise your hand if you believe that running will make you look like a runner. If your hand isn’t in the air you’re probably not being honest.” (Emphasis mine.)

I was nodding in agreement the whole time I read it. And I still raised my hand at the end. It’s hard to look at those whippet-thin women who run marathons professionally and not think that it was the running that gave them that body rather than thinking it’s more likely they naturally excel at running because they are built like a whippet. I’m not saying they don’t work hard to be that good – I’m just saying they are attracted to the sport because they have some natural ability in it. When you look at the non-pros that run you will see every body type imaginable because lots of us enjoy it regardless of our shape. But when you look at elite levels there is very little deviation from the lithe mold. Kind of like professional models.

I think the other reason I’ve believed this for so long is because I want it to be true. I want to believe that Pilates will give me “long, lean muscles” even though I know that the length of my muscles was determined by my genes before I was even born. I want to believe that if I do Gwyneth Paltrow’s workout that I will look like her. Even though I know Madonna does the exact same one and she and Gwynnie look totally different. I want to believe it because the alternative is learning to accept and the love the body I’ve been given and that can be very hard work. But you, if you believe this myth too, and I pay for this belief. We pay in money when we buy the magazines or DVDs but even more we pay with our tears, body hate and punishing workouts in pursuit of a goal that was never attainable.

This is the best argument in my mind for exercising for health over exercising for looks. Of course workouts have the ability to help you look the best with the body you have – dropping fat and gaining muscle looks good on everyone! – and workouts do, to some extent, shape your body to the work you are performing (see boxers and their buff arms). But no workout has the ability to give you a new bone structure or more height or make your body suddenly decide to start storing extra fat in your boobs instead of your thighs. I don’t know why this is a lesson I have to keep re-learning. Thank goodness for (ex)strippers!

What do you think – do you agree with Lou Schuler that this is a myth or do you think you look like what you do? Were you as surprised as I was when he said that the photoshoot was likely the first time the model had ever tried that workout? Anyone else have Lady Gaga’s “Born this way” stuck in their head now too?? You’re welcome.
